Sex-change Pc returns in support role

A FORMER police constable, Tony Ashton, returned to work yesterday as Claire Ashton, on the Shrewsbury police civilian staff, after undergoing a sex change.

The officer, in her mid-40s, reached agreement on Monday to take medical retirement from the West Mercia force, which he joined in 1987. “We shall be providing all possible support,” said Supt Mike Smith. “She is beginning a week’s induction course for her role as a communications operator.”
