Sex-swap lawyer jailed for embezzling
By Auslan Cramb, Scotland Correspondent

A TRANSSEXUAL solicitor who began life as a minister’s son will spend 15 months in a women’s prison after being jailed for embezzling more than £16,000 from a client.

Alexandra MacRae, 57, who has stood as a Scottish nationalist parliamentary candidate as a man and a woman, was jailed after Dundee sheriff court was told that she had been declared bankrupt and was unable to repay the money. She is the first sex-change offender imprisoned in Scotland, and although legally regarded as male, she is expected to be treated as a woman at a female unit at Craiginches Prison, Aberdeen, after a medical examination.

MacRae, of Moseley, Birmingham, whose first name was Stephen until gender reassignment surgery in 1984, admitted embezzling £16,634 in 1996 while practising in Dundee. She used the money to pay her staff.
