Kathy loses her medals (Newcastle Evening Chronicle)
Kathy loses her medalsJuly 02, 2000 GENDER bender granny Kathy Jager will not get back the medals she won at Gateshead, it was revealed today. The 56-year-old was at the centre of a sex change row during the Veteran World Championships when rivals accused her of being a man. She passed a sex test but was later suspended for two years for taking a banned drug after testing positive for an artificial hormone. USA Track and Field has since accepted that the methyl testosterone found in a blood test taken was in medicine she takes to help her cope with the menopause. However, the gold medals and world records in the 100 and 200 metres and the three other medals she won at the event will not be returned. Mrs Jager said: “In the US they felt they had some responsibility for the lack of education given to me about the drug issues, but unfortunately the IAAF takes a very hard line on the rules. “The rules were there and I was a victim of circumstance. As far as the records and the recognition of the medals go I’m going to have to earnthem all over again.” Copyright © Evening Chronicle 2000 |
