[top]After Dinner speaker: Friday evening

Shaun Woodward, MP for St Helens South.

Shaun Woodward has been a member of parliament for since 1997. Previously he had worked for the National Consumer Council, then at the BBC in News and Current Affairs, before leaving to work for Prime Minister John Major and his newly appointed Chairman, Chris Patten as Director of Communications. He then taught at in the East End of London at Queen Mary and Westfield College, before becoming a Fellow at the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School at Harvard University. Orignally he entered parliament as a member of the Conservative party until after 2 years he faced up to “the brutal reality that the values in which I believed were to be realized within Labour”. After crossing the floor of the house. It was not an easy time. As he puts it:

“Some of my family were horribly picked on by some of the media - not least my elderly parents who were the subject of a media stake out; as was my brother, now sister Lesley, who was made the subject of several tabloid front pages (and one broadsheet newspaper) because of her decision to have a sex-change. This vilification of my brave sister , because of my decision to join Labour, caused huge pain and suffering. The later realisation that it had been staff at Central Office in the Tory Party who had ’led’ the journalists to pick on my sister was final proof ( if more were needed) that I was right to leave the Tories. The time had come to stand up to these extremists.”

Shaun has supported the Gender Recognition Bill through its stages in parliament, speaking very eloguently on the need for equality and respect. He chaired ’The Joint Human Rights Committee’ in government which considered whether the Gender Recognition Bill did meet the requirements of the Human Rights Act.

Shaun is a speaker who always speaks to his audience without patronising them, and with great knowledge. We feel very honoured that he has agreed to be our after dinner speaker.
