Regulars felt “uncomfortable” with Ms Jones’s presence

A transsexual who was barred from a pub because regulars felt uncomfortable with her presence has won an out-of-court settlement.

Lisa Jones, 43, was asked to stay away from the Jacob’s Well pub in Honley, West Yorkshire, last October after complaints from pub regulars.

She took legal action for sexual discrimination backed by the Equal Opportunities Commission, which argued that discrimination surrounding gender reassignment was a “major problem”.

£1,600 compensation

EOC solicitor Hilary Slater said: “There is a strong argument that discrimination on grounds of gender reassignment by service providers is unlawful.”

Ms Jones received a settlement of £1,600 in compensation and costs.

The design engineer, who has not yet had a sex-change operation, said it was upsetting to be told she was not welcome in the pub.

The landlord has apologised, but Ms Jones has declined his invitation to return to the pub.
