GP believed sex-change operation was a success

A GP told the High Court yesterday that a transsexual who underwent surgery to change from male to female had never expressed any unhappiness to her about the operation.

Dr Pauline Moloney-Quinn was giving evidence in the action by Ms Lydia Annice Foy (54), a dentist, of Athy, Co Kildare, who is seeking to have her birth certificate altered to record her sex as female rather than male.  She underwent the surgery in London in 1992.

Earlier, under cross-examination by Mr Diarmaid McGuinness SC, for the State, Ms Foy said that, since her sex change, she has been called names, ridiculed in the media, had objects thrown at her and was unable to get work.  “I don’t think I should be punished in this way,” she told Mr Justice McKechnie.

The hearing continues.
