In The News

When Press For Change began it’s endeavours, communication with it’s members was by post and we would send out periodic Newsletters explaining our work and informing activists what they could do to help.

Since then our online presence has grown. As more of our community took up use of the Internet, we switched to reproducing news items on these web pages.

As the collection grew and we were called on to spend more of our time talking to Government (a good thing™), it became more difficult to maintain.

News items are still reported on our News mailing list but are no longer reproduced on this site as facsimilies.

News pages[top]

In this section we keep a record of the issues which make it into the news.

We’ve tried to include the bad news as well as the good news … and to give space to articles which aren’t really "hard news" but which show how trans people are depicted in the media.  Sometimes, there are events which we feel deserve a comment … so if we can find time to write, you may find some PFC comment here too.

We’ve organised these pages by year :

Writing about trans people

On these news pages, you’ll find some articles written by trans people … but mostly, you’ll find articles written about trans people — by others.

Rules for writing about us (external link) is a short but lucid guide written by the American trans academic Jacob Hale … but even if you’re just reading, rather than writing, it’s a very useful to tool to measure just how well a writer has really considered what it means to be trans.

Of course the articles in this section aren’t the only news stories and analysis to pass our way.  Since we set up the UKPFC-News mailing list in the summer of 1997, we have used it as a way of rapidly bringing the news to our readers rather than them having to come and find it.  There’s also less work for us in sending an email message than in maintaining a website!

We’ve made the archives of UKPFC-News available on the web, where you can read all the stories … and find many of the items which aren’t featured here :
