Press for Change, the UK’s transsexual rights campaign, welcomed today’s First Reading of the Gender Recognition Bill.

The Bill was introduced today in the House of Lords, and is expected to be published tomorrow (friday).

Claire McNab, vice-president of Press For Change said today:

“This is the beginning of the last stage of our 33-year campaign for privacy and basic rights.  First Reading of a bill is a formal stage, which takes only moments of parliament’s time — but we are delighted that parliament will now start work.”

Claire McNab added:

“The draft Gender Recognition Bill was a good draft, but it needed improvement in some crucial areas.  We hope that the final bill will include some of the necessary changes, and we will lobby peers and MPs to consider further amendments”
