Press Releases

IntroductionList of press releases

Press for Change doesn’t issue many general Press Releases.  That’s not because we are lazy or reticent in working with the media, but because we target our efforts to maximum effect.

Most of the time nowadays, we find that the press comes looking for information without us having to draw their attention to the issues.  Times have changed, and trans issues are increasingly part of the staple diet of a journalist covering civil rights … and journalists know that Press For Change activists can explain the issues thoroughly.

Many of the articles you can read in our In The News section are the result of PFC campaigners working directly with an individual journalist to explain the issues, providing background to an existing story or drawing the attention of a particular correspondent to an aspect of trans lives which they are well-placed to illuminate.  Sometimes this arises from an enquiry to which we respond, and sometimes we initiate the contact.

It’s important to stress that Press for Change is not just a reactive campaign: we also work to shape and change the news agenda, to actively promote an understanding of just how many areas of life are different for trans people because of the discrimination we face … and how we no longer quietly endure the indignities. Trans people are not people "with problems" — we are people who face unneccesary obstacles, and we stand up to assert our simple claim to respect and equality.

Most of the time, that message is most effectively conveyed to the public by taking the time to explain an issue in depth to one journalist, who can cover it properly.  But there are occasions when a bigger story arises, when we need to draw wider press attention to an immediate issue which we believe that all the press should be aware of — and that’s when we issue a general notice to the press, such as those listed below.
