No. 302: Civil Rights for Transsexuals
1995-96 session
In the course of the 1992-97 parliament, 282 MPs of all parties were known to have been approached by at least one constituent on the issue of a change in the law to grant full civil rights and liberties to transsexual people. Of these, 188 made a clear statement in favour of such a change. Only 4 spoke against it. 68 MPs also went so far as to sign Dr. Lynne Jones’s Early Day Motion No. 302.

House of Commons
Early Day Motion No. 302 of the 1995-96 session
Civil Rights for Transsexuals
That this House welcomes the granting of legal aid to transsexuals fighting for legal recignition; condemns the fact that transsexuals should have to be taking such action in order to gain their basic civil rights;urges the government to support the Gender Identity (Registration and Civil Status) Bill on 2nd February which, if it became law, would end the legal difficulties presently being experienced by around 10,000 transsexual people in the United Kingdom; and believes that, since gender dysphoria is a recognised medical condition, full legal rights for transsexuals are long overdue.
Motion tabled by Dr Lynne Jones MP (Lab, Birmingham Selly Oak)
