Jim Sealey is an Independent Financial Adviser. This means that he is not connected to, or employed by, any one company. An important part of his job is to research and pick the best insurer to meet your needs in any particular area.
For the last year, Jim has been working behind the scenes with insurance companies to ensure fair and reasonable treatment for transsexuals. He has taken the trouble to make sure that underwriters (ie. the people who make the decision on your application) are well informed and, in return, will take a reasonable view. Also, he has developed contacts within the administration of these companies so that your applications go only to designated and responsible people who understand your situation.
The result of this is that he knows which companies want your business and respond positively to it.

Ignorance rather than prejudice …
It is obvious that some insurance companies do not understand transsexual issues, but some have learned and are keen to learn more. As a result of Jim’s encouragement, many are already better informed and more responsive than they were twelve months ago.
In fact one company is so interested now that it has offered to research Gender Dysphoria as a priority - providing it gets enough applications to justify an in depth study. They have been grateful for the up to date information provided so far by Press For Change.
They also think that your money is as good as anybody else’s. .. and they’re right. The financial value of the transsexual market (estimated at between 5,000 to 10,000 people, plus their families and friends) amounts to many millions of pounds. Any company who wilfully ignores that sort of opportunity through ignorance has a lot of explaining to do to their shareholders.
But the company needs a reason to make transgender issues a priority. In other words, they have to show that there is a market. At present, they are not getting enough applications to cause any change in policy.
If a breakthrough can be made with this one company, then others will be sure to follow, for purely commercial reasons though … and then we’ll have achieved our goal.
