DARAMOLA, Y. DAMOLA (MRS), COLLEGE OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, COVENANT UNIVERSITY, CANAANLAND, OTTA - NIGERIA [schedule]

Biologically, female students are by nature created for excellent performance, but for the impregnable cultural milieu that are inherited from ages, which tend to force them down the lazy lane of belief that men are created to carry out hard and busy schedules, while the women are mere supportive. This cultural belief has disenabled most women from putting in their best generally especially in their academic pursuit. Poor performances of female students in education are the combined forces of impregnable cultural milieu and misinterpreted religious bigotry.

This paper addresses the issues of culture and religion as a potent tool of sexual deprivation in most Nigerian cultures. It went further to state that apart from the forces of culture, wrong religious beliefs and misinterpretations especially Christianity, contribute more dangerously towards the level of women subservience to men. The paper concluded that both the cultural and religious approaches can better be properly interpreted to enhance the confidence of female educational strength. It finally posited that a changing world requires a changing approach to gender roles in the family.
