Congress Paper Abstract
Transitioning On The Job: Pragmatics and Perspective From a MTF Trade Unionist
LISA KASSNER, PRIDE AT WORK, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA ![]()
This paper describes the on-the-job transitioning process of a male-to-female broadcast engineer employed in the U.S. by a major television network. As a member of her labor union, NABET CWA - Local 53 (National Association of Broadcast Employee Technicians, Communications Workers of America - Local 53) , she received unfailing support and was able to overcome significant prejudice and bigotry. She experienced in a very personal way the role trade unions can play in giving every worker a voice and protection against discrimination. This paper seeks to raise awareness of trade unionism and the international labor movement as powerful vehicles for creating stable and secure working environments for all workers regardless of sex, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, race, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, religion or political views.
