Who Put the “Trans” in Transgender? Who Took out the “Gender”?

This paper reports consultative work for the Oxford English Dictionary’s first entry for ’transgender’. It identifies four major traditions in the usage of the term ’transgender’ and invites participants to consider the origins, development, consequences and possible futures of each tradition.
