Proposals for the HM Prison Service Review of Guidelines
relating to Transsexual Prisoners
Forget all those horror stories of inhuman treatment in far away jails. Why travel when you can get the same at home? Just be a transsexual. You’ll go to prison for longer and … as this report clearly shows … you may never emerge. Kate More of the Middlesborough-based Gender and Sexuality Alliance was invited by HM Prison Service to submit proposals to a review of the service’s guidelines relating to the treatment of transsexual people in prison. Her report gives the lie to this impressive sounding "review" from the outset. There are no guidelines at present, just a breathtaking catalogue of cruelty. One image stays in the mind concerning a transsexual woman who had already had to fight for essential post-operative treatment to be continued :
"… when experts were called in to advise that she did indeed need hormones and to use regular dilatation of her new vagina if it were not to cause her permanent damage, the governor agreed to let her perform her dilation - if watched by two male members of the prison staff. Eventually one officer stated that she needed the real thing and raped her. She was found the following morning having tried to strangle herself with a bed-sheet."
Makes you proud to be British, doesn’t it?
To have someone describe celebrating the achievements of a transsexual person as a "descent into abomination" is, sadly, not unknown. But it is particularly odious when the justification used is religious, when a set of beliefs shared by millions are used as the basis for degrading others who share the same beliefs. This link takes to you a fine example of this genre — where you’ll find a further link to a brilliant refutation.
